Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and acrobat. Queen Latifah's work in music film and television has been recognized with an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. The daughter is Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". Her cousin bestowed it on her in the age of eight. Always tall, at 5'10, Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. She performed the number"Home" from the show The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah is one of the first participants of Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah upon hearing the track. Her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
